8. Extreme Rules

It’s easy to look back on Extreme Rules as one of 2016’s better PPVs. It featured two bonafide Match of the Year contenders, in the form of a Fatal Four Way IC Title match between Cesaro, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and The Miz, a stellar WWE Title match between AJ Styles and Roman Reigns, which ended with the long overdue return of Seth Rollins.

The former match was as fast-paced and dramatic as they come, and proved why each man has earned critical acclaim in 2016. The latter match was an absolutely brutal trade-off of near-falls and finishing moves, one that thoroughly cemented both AJ and Reigns as main event players in the WWE.

The rest of the show, however, was not so good. The Tag Title match, the Women's Title match and the US Title match were underwhelming, while Chris Jericho and Dean Ambrose put on one of the worst matches of the year, in the overly long, overly gimmicky ‘Asylum Match’.

No other show featured quite so many peaks and troughs, and its this lack of consistency that prevented Extreme Rules from achieving PPV greatness.
