Everything You DIDN’T KNOW About WCW’s Final Days

15. The Disciplinary Issues Never, Ever Stopped

As bad as WCW’s reputation was, it was a pro wrestling company. WCW did not own the patent on egotistical, unprofessional bullsh*t. WCW is simply, rightly synonymous with that sort of thing.

Of course Hulk Hogan was going to refuse to do jobs most of the time; he became the biggest star in U.S. wrestling history by holding the WWF title for a combined 2,185 days. Of course Kevin Nash was going to look after himself; as much as it didn’t feel that way at the time, he knew better than the aspiring smark teenagers who thought he could make a star out of Blitzkrieg by putting him over.

But Baff Bagwell whining about doing jobs to anybody who tried not to listen; Scott Steiner terrorising Diamond Dallas Page; his brother Rick beating up guys for real because he was either instructed to, got off on it, or both: WCW was plagued by unprofessional lunatics who lacked the drawing record to even begin to justify this sort of behaviour. It wasn’t just the talent who behaved like overgrown and ill-disciplined children, either. The referees and broadcasters were at it.

Per the January 8, 2001 issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WCW finally caught and punished the perps responsible for an incident that went down on a flight a few months prior. Referees Mickey Jay and Mark Johnson, and ring announcer Dave Penzer, were all suspended for letting off a stink bomb.

The Plane Ride That Smells.

Is that anything?
