Ex-WWE Writer Reveals Original Braun Strowman Universal Title Plan

Braun Strowman was supposed to win WWE's Universal Title in 2018, not 2020.

Braun Strowman wasn't originally going to beat Goldberg for the Universal Title at WrestleMania 36, but he was supposed to beat Brock Lesnar for the same belt back at Crown Jewel 2018.

Former WWE writer Kazeem Famuyide explained via his podcast that Braun was booked to topple Brock in Saudi Arabia. The ex-creative team member revealed that nobody on the writing staff could believe it when they watched Lesnar beat Braun on the international stadium show instead.

That forced them to head back into the office ASAP and re-write that coming Monday's episode of Raw from scratch; they already had an entire night based around Strowman as champ. All of that content had to be scrapped because...well, he wouldn't be.

Famuyide and other writers wondered if WWE top brass had purposely left them in the dark about the lack of a title switch at Crown Jewel. They didn't appreciate having to come up with a fresh three hours of TV without any warning.

Strowman's 2020 run was a bit of a disaster, but things could've been different for the big man. For the record, he went from being pencilled in for a win over Brock and celebrating on Raw to chasing Baron Corbin around the building.
