Johnny Gargano is in a tough spot. Coming off his run with Tommaso Ciampa as a part of #DIY, Gargano had as much momentum and fan sympathy as any other babyface in the company. Ciampa's injury has delayed their encounter, but when it comes, no other match on the card will matter. Gargano vs Ciampa is the feud that will define NXT, and for maximum effect, it should be over the NXT Championship.

NXT goes through peaks and valleys. One month they can be crippled by injuries, having to progress wrestlers far quicker just to keep the ship afloat. The next month, Full Sail can be utterly swamped with talent, both home-grown and from the independents.

NXT is currently in the latter phase, with the arrival of Drew McIntyre, Roderick Strong, and both members of ReDragon. Now a singles competitor, Gargano needs to avoid being muscled out by these new contenders while he awaits the return of his dance partner.

Whether it's in a month, six months, or a year, Gargano/Ciampa is going to set NXT ablaze. Some have pined for him to progress to the Cruiserweight division, but NXT arguably provides the better stage for their feud. A battle of this magnitude needs the World Championship, and Gargano's chase could make him the most beloved superstar since Daniel Bryan.
