Goldberg's 10 Best Moments Ever

4. Goldberg Meets Bret

In March of 1999, WCW was a mess. The Fingerpoke of Doom had gone down, Goldberg had lost his title, and Bret Hart was being completely misused. But for one night there was some hope that things would change.

Hart was a heel, but he was in Canada, so the crowd treated him as a hero. He was visibly frustrated, and he cut a bit of shoot promo, as he alluded to the ratings and took a minor shot at the WWF. It was like a milder version of CM Punk’s Pipe Bomb promo over a decade later, but filled with just as much passion.

While Hart bashed Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, and Eric Bischoff, it was Goldberg who drew the most of his ire. After challenging him to a fight, Goldberg emerged and didn’t want to mince any words. He just attacked with his spear. The two men were knocked down, with neither able to get back up. The crowd was just as confused as the announcers.

Finally, Bret started to stir and slowly rose to his feet. He revealed that under his Toronto Maple Leafs jersey he had a steel plate strapped around his waist. It was a brilliant trap.

The company never did take full advantage of the feud (Hart was hurt and needed time off, and just before he was ready to return his brother Owen died), but it was a well-written first chapter to something that could have been fantastic.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
