In-Depth UFC 249 Breakdown: Khabib Nurmagomedov Vs. Justin Gaethje
2. Striking
While we spent most of the grappling section praising the skills of Tony Ferguson, let's shine a light on the area that makes Justin Gaethje the human highlight reel that he is.
To the uneducated eye, Gaethje looks like a wild man, recklessly slinging shots at his opponent until one connects and sends them crumbling to the canvas. While this might be somewhat true early on in his career, especially in his first three fights inside the UFC, he's made a small, yet significant change in his approach that has help him in his last few bouts.
While he's slightly more cautious now, he's still maintained the aggressive streak that made him such a feared fighter. What's even scarier now is that he's methodical in his chaos and gives himself the opportunity pick the perfect shot against his opponents. If there's an element of his grappling that he utilises exceptionally well, it's his clinch game. However, this is used to control his opponents while he lands a number of leg kicks as he slowly, yet brutally tears their legs apart.
Gaethje's attacks might not be flashy, but if unrelenting violence is what you're after then it's hard not to be a fan.
While fighting fire with fire against Gaethje sounds like death wish for most fighters, Ferguson has the tools and is brave enough to be the man to stand toe-to toe with him. If Gaethje is the modern day sprawl and brawler, Ferguson's approach is far more unorthodox.
El Cucuy has a wide assortment of strikes from a variety of angles, making him an extremely tough opponent to real prepare for. After all, how do you prepare for someone whose fight style is all over the place? One thing we can predict is that his devastating power will be on show and if Gaethje starts to fall into his old ways, his face will be covered in blood in no time.
