Jerry Lawler 'It's Good To Be The King' DVD Review: 17 Interesting Observations

4. The Kat's Firing

Jerry married Stacey 'The Kat' Carter in September 2000. The pair were part of the then WWF and life was good. However, King recalls how JR, the head of talent relations at the time, called him in and revealed how Vince McMahon wanted to release his wife from her contract. When Jerry asked why, JR couldn't give him an answer as Vince and the other members of WWE's hierarchy didn't provide one themselves in the first place. Then, Kitty reveals how she and her husband went directly to Vince, only for them to be told to go to JR. Ross had allegedly went to McMahon and told his boss that The Kat needed to be released. The whole situation was a mess. No one knew who to believe then and they still don't seem to know the truth to this day. Jerry, being the devoted husband that he was, told Vince that since he couldn't give the pair a reason then he'd have to quit alongside his wife. Expecting Vince to put up a fight to try and keep one of his lead announcers, Lawler was left dumbfounded when Vince merely put out his hand and thanked The King for all he had done for the company. Jerry was replaced by Paul Heyman on the announcer's desk and had to return to the independent scene, wrestling every Friday, Saturday and Sundays to keep the money flowing. That's no way for anyone over the age of 50 to make a living. A year went by before WWE reached out to Lawler and offered him his old job back. King jumped at the chance.
