John Cena: 5 Awesome Matches And 5 That Sucked

4. John Cena Vs Brock Lesnar, WWE Title Match - (Backlash 2003)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLr2g0-X3qk Cena's first taste of the big time came in April 2003 against newly crowned WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. Despite being a WWE title shot, this "main event" was booked secondary to a Triple H six man contest and the first ever meeting of The Rock vs Goldberg. Still, Cena was being given a considerable proving ground. If his match with Lesnar was good it could have led to a 2003 series. Unfortunately WWE officials judged that Cena blew it, they were unimpressed with the effort, and blame was laid at Cena's door. He was dropped back into irrelevance before re-emerging in the Autumn of 03. The road agents were right, Cena was not ready. The match had various shortcuts and tiresome rest holds, it failed to emotionally connect. There was no way that the perceived minnow John Cena was going to beat the newly crowned Brock Lesnar who was expected to dominate WWE for the next decade. Still, there were some positives, at one point loud "Let's go Cena" chants, and the buildup serves as a reminder as how entertaining John's heel rapper character was. How differently things turned out after Brock's win. Lesnar was gone from WWE a year later and Cena became the biggest face of the company since Hogan. Things came full circle when Brock and John met again in April 2012 - this time Cena won and it was one of the best matches of the year.
