John Cena's 7 Night Of Champions Matches From Worst To Best
2. 2012 Vs. CM Punk
For over 300 days (up to this point), CM Punk had held the WWE Championship around his waist.
Day number 302 fell on the 2012 edition of Night of Champions and his opponent for that night was frequent challenger John Cena. These two had a pretty passionate promo alongside Bret Hart on the Raw before this where Punk called himself the best in the world while Cena said that would be decided at the PPV.
Punk controlled most of this match early on but it evened out closer to the end. Both guys did a great job at making what seemed like dozens of believable near fall finishes happen in the final 10 minutes or so. Notably, there was an awkward moonsault miss by Punk and also a Rock Bottom that Cena kicked out of.
The ending was a little wacky: it appeared that Cena had won the match after getting the three count from a bridging German suplex off the corner turnbuckles but, while he thought he won the title, it turned out that both men had their shoulders down so the referee ruled it as a draw, and Punk retained.
A screwy finish to a typically awesome match.
