John Cena's 7 Night Of Champions Matches From Worst To Best
3. 2014 Vs. Brock Lesnar
SummerSlam 2014 showcased Brock Lesnar against John Cena in one of the most brutal one beat downs of John Cena's career. Lesnar was riding a wave of dominance that began when he defeated Undertaker's Streak at that year's WrestleMania. This was John Cena's rematch for the WWE championship that he lost in the bout that saw him suplexed 16 times.
This go round was nowhere near as one-sided as the SummerSlam bout but Cena was clearly the underdog. Near the end of the match he nailed a third AA and had a clear advantage while Lesnar was caught in his STF. When he finally hit his fourth AA, MITB briefcase holder Seth Rollins blindsided him in the back, ending the match.
Post-match, Seth Rollins hit a curb stomp on Brock Lesnar and teased a cash-in. Justin Roberts even announced the title match but John Cena attacked Seth to stop the match before it even started.
This bout was a way for John Cena to regain face after being completely manhandled the month prior. While there was no intention of a title transfer, the Rollins interference was probably the best way to handle the ending. After this match in September 2014, Brock Lesnar would not defend his WWE championship again until the January 2015 Royal Rumble match against Seth Rollins and John Cena in what turned out to be a phenomenal match.
