John Cena's WWE Return: 10 Things We Can Expect

4. Revisiting An Awkward Past

The 2017 feud between Roman Reigns and John Cena was a rare case of WWE's hyperbole being mostly true.

Bewilderingly booked for October's Raw-exclusive No Mercy event, the match joined a first time Universal Championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman on a card WWE were pitching as "like WrestleMania" or (countless) words to that effect. The odd thing here was that it wasn't bullsh*t. Unlike the worked shoot promo battle between 'The Big Dog' and 'The Champ' that was supposed to add drama to a situation that felt short on plenty.

That was bullsh*t.

Framed around just who would be more protected in the booking by Vince McMahon, the two traded faux-controversial barbs in a battle that went Cena's way after Roman briefly forgot what he was going to say. Or didn't, but either way, a reminder that this was a carefully scripted back-and-forth only further served to break the immersion.
