Lewis Howse's 10 Favourite WWE Matches Of All-Time
5. Ricky Steamboat Vs. Randy Savage - WrestleMania III
Again, a match before my time that I only got the chance to see when it became readily available on DVD but one that I continually revisit and just marvel at. Same as Savage/Warrior, there's not a great emotional connection to this one for me since I wasn't around to watch the build, but I admire this match on a purely technical level.
It's been said that Savage, knowing that Hogan/Andre was going to draw a monster house, was so intent on producing something special with the ultra-talented Steamboat that he wrote the whole of this match down weeks before it was due to go on before 93,000 (actually 78,000) at the Pontiac Silverdome.
He would call out numbers to Ricky backstage, at the gym and on the plane and The Dragon would fire back the sequence that correlated to the number. They had the match down in their minds, but could they produce it when the lights were on bright?
You're damn right they could! Savage and Steamboat rocked the Silverdome with fifteen minutes of silky smooth wrestling which was years ahead of its time in terms of pacing and structure. You simply didn't see this many near falls happening this quickly in the Hogan era, and it blew fans away. It helped that they were invested in the characters, too, rooting for the Dragon and booing the detestable Macho Man.
Watching many, many years later, this match blew me away as well and no matter how many matches try to imitate it, it's still the best example of its kind.
