Although I'm British, I have no particular affinity for wrestlers that hail from the Queen's country. Sure, I enjoy the work of William Regal, Dynamite Kid and Neville, but not because they're British themselves. It's because they're really talented performers and they entertain me.

Davey Boy Smith was a full-on national hero in 1992, which was around the time the WWF enjoyed a nice little boom in popularity in the UK. Their popularity was such that they could hold SummerSlam that year at Wembley Stadium, drawing a then-record of 80,355.

Bulldog was working on top that night, battling brother-in-law Bret Hart over the Intercontinental Title. While the match itself is a beauty, I appreciate it even more knowing the backstory.

Basically, Davey Boy was in really, really rough shape. He hadn't spent the last few months training and mentally preparing fro his crowning moment but had actually been abusing drugs. He turned up in London in a right old state, having not slept for 48 hours.

Bret, through some miracle, guided Davey - who was blown up about two minutes in and had forgotten everything they had planed - to the match of his life. There were no unnecessary theatrics here, this was just two guys wrestling and trading the advantage and throwing it all on the line in front of a massive, enthusiastic crowd.

Credit must definitely go to Davey, too, because he kept up his end of the bargain and was with Bret every step of the way. He may not have been as crisp as if he'd, y'know had some sleep or not taken loads of drugs or something, but he was there and he was great.
