Macho Man Randy Savage DVD Review: 16 Things You Should Know

4. Leaving Vince

Off the back of the Slim Jim commercials, Vince McMahon decided he wanted to start using Savage on commentary. The logic was that Savage's iconic voice would be good for announcing duties. There was also the fact that the WWF as a company had embarked in a new direction, with the "New Generation" getting pushed ahead of the dated 80's stars. It was now all about Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels - guys like Macho Man were deemed too old. With this in mind, Savage had pitched for a match with Shawn Michaels. Lanny says that it would have been a two year plan in which Macho put over HBK as WWF Champion at the end. When Vince said no to the idea, "that's when he went to WCW." Still, it certainly appeared on-screen that there were no hard feelings. Vince's "Thank you" speech from Raw is shown on the documentary. However, Bret Hart says "As I recall, Vince was quite shook up by it." "I know that Vince was beyond shellshocked," Kevin Nash adds. "It wasn't a smooth exit, there was some injured feelings," Bret states.
