New Details On WWE & NJPW Potentially Working Together

An update on the WWE/NJPW working relationship, Daniel Bryan's role & more.

This week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter features an update on the reported WWE/NJPW working relationship negotiations, the existence of which was broken by the same publication last week.

Dave Meltzer writes that while Nick Khan is the point guy when it comes to this situation, it wasn't the president and chief revenue officer's idea, though some believe he suggested Vince McMahon pursue it. Daniel Bryan was involved in early discussions, but a source indicates that he hasn't been part of the negotiations recently.

When pitched, the idea had nothing to do with trying to hurt AEW, which has an existing relationship with NJPW. Rather, it would have been focused on NXT and something that would benefit both sides.

An interesting facet there, given that WWE's working relationships rarely pan out that way.

Meltzer notes that NJPW will not agree to any deal that isn't going to be "extremely beneficial" to them, adding that while previous negotiations with New Japan have never gone anywhere for WWE in the past, Nick Khan wasn't with the promotion back then.

The original report suggested an exclusive agreement allowing WWE to send wrestlers to Japan as and when requested.
