NJPW G1 Climax 2017: Early Favourites To Win

7. Michael Elgin

New Japan Pro Wrestling

Such is the consistency of NJPW's main event product, it is easy to forget that Michael Elgin participated in a five-star match as recently as February. Elgin came up short against Tetsuya Naito at The New Beginning on that night, which he followed up with a first round loss in the New Japan Cup to eventual runner-up Bad Luck Fale.

All might be quiet for the Unbreakable one right now, but don't be fooled - Michael Elgin is in with a shout of winning the 2017 G1 Climax. It was the G1 Climax that resurrected the Canadian's career back in 2015, and it could well be the G1 Climax that makes him a megastar in 2017.

Michael Elgin in Japan is a different beast to Michael Elgin around the rest of the world, and his feats of strength never fail to get a major reaction from the New Japan audience. Elgin and Kenny Omega battled each other throughout 2016 - could an all-Canadian main event be on the cards for Wrestle Kingdom 12?

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
