3. Shingo Takagi Vs. Jay White

A little on the fleshy side for the electric finishing sequence they were aiming for, Jay White’s win over Shingo Takagi was nonetheless a stellar retelling of the ‘Shingo Vs The Heavyweights’ story and a well-crafted reminder of the ‘Switchblade’s imminent threat to the top of the block.

Takagi’s been a workhorse this year, suffering no damage to his once-infallible aura since absorbing the odd loss or two in this tournament. He is starting to resemble the Black Knight from Monty Python’s Holy Grail though - Jon Moxley took his knee, whilst here, Jay White took his neck. White’s early losses to his former Chaos colleagues put him on the back-foot in this year’s tournament (in direct contrast to how things went for him last year), but his cocky confidence never wavered. His infuriatingly gutsy guile late in this clash implied why.

Surviving the Pumping Bomber and the Made In Japan, White had only to avoid the Last Of The Dragon (he did), in order to find the route through to hitting his Blade Runner (he did) and ominously hold the fingers up to reflect the points still to play for (he did, over and over again).
