Randy Orton: 5 Awesome Matches And 5 That Sucked

1. Mick Foley Vs. Randy Orton (Backlash 2004)

When Randy Orton kicked Mick Foley down the Madison Square Garden stairwell in the summer of 2003, it had to be to set up a future match between the two. Foley knew exactly what he could do to help Orton. Since the rookie was good looking, charismatic and appeared to be clean cut, Foley wanted to have a hardcore style match with Randy to show the fans that the Legend Killer was a diverse performer and that, hopefully, they would respect him more at the end. After setting it up at the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania XX, the IC Title match was booked for Backlash in April 2004. The Hardcore Legend was motivated, had lost a ton of weight and was ready to give a career-defining performance with Orton. They did exactly that. The young Orton had never been in a match remotely resembling what Cactus Jack was about to put him through. There were chairs, barbed wire, baseball bats, thumb tacks and everything else you would associate the demented Foley with. Through all of it, The Intercontinental Champion looked like he belonged and showed an aggression that he hadn't shown in matches up to this point, At the conclusion of the match, Orton nailed Foley with an RKO onto a barbed wire baseball bat to retain his title. When Orton walked to the back that night, he'd had the best match of his career and gave Mick Foley one last great match in his career, too. Respect.
