Before we jump into 1999, you should know that it was hard to find the correct placement for this one on the list - and that's because of how conflicting certain aspects of it were.
On one hand, Undertaker's evolution into the Ministry of Darkness's satanic leader was a superb escalation of his character and, through his various sacrifices, rituals and, yeah, even weddings, this was the most creatively adventurous that the company ever was with his character - and, in all honesty, he thrived because of it.
That being said, the quality of his matches weren't up to his usual standard. Now, this wouldn't have been all that noticeable normally, as he was still consistent with his entertaining style of in-ring brawling and put on a highly underrated battle with The Rock at that year's King of The Ring, but given how on-the-money he was between '97 and '98, the difference was evident. Perhaps he was hurting or maybe he just didn't click with several opponents, but given that he ended up suffering a groin injury later in the year, it could have been the former.
That aside, however, the year was good to him as he won his third WWE Championship and even temporarily thrived in the tag team division with the Big Show. If only it had lasted a little longer...
