Royal Rumble 1992 was long past Vince McMahon's first prime period as a promoter, but the star-laden battle royal was the only way to anoint Ric Flair WWE Champion for the very first time.

'The Nature Boy' outwitting and outwrestling the rest of the roster was the closest his character came to mirroring the wile and wisdom of the man who dominated the National Wrestling Alliance and World Championship Wrestling the prior decade. His title losses to Randy Savage and Bret Hart were somewhat unspectacular, but "being the man that beat the man" - especially in Bret's case - did much for their cause.
