Ranking Each Of Randy Orton’s 12 World Title Wins
11. World Heavyweight Championship Vs. Christian (SmackDown, May 6 2011)
There wasn’t necessarily anything wrong with the way in which Orton conducted himself when he won the World Heavyweight Championship in May 2011. After a 17-minute contest, Orton scored the pinfall, clean in the middle of thing ring, having nailed an RKO from (naturally) out of nowhere.
However, it was the story underpinning the victory that leaves a bitter taste.
Orton’s opponent that night was Christian; the same Christian who had himself only won the World title a few days’ prior at the Extreme Rules PPV. Not only had that been a career-defining win for Christian and his maiden World championship victory, it had also been something of an homage to Edge, who’d recently been forced to retire from action as a result of his ongoing neck issues.
Basically, there was a lot of emotion wrapped up in that victory, and yet, within a couple of days. it all meant diddly-squat when Orton swooped in to claim the title as his own.
Granted, that wasn’t necessarily Orton’s fault, and even though it was a stellar performance with which to win the belt, the memory is somewhat tarnished by the circumstances which preceded it.
