Ranking Every Men's WWE Royal Rumble Match Of The 2010s
8. 2012
The Royal Rumble in 2012 is a classic example of how too much of what's supposedly a "good thing" can drown out flavour. In the weeks leading into the Rumble, Michael Cole would incessantly remind us that "anyone was eligible" to enter the Rumble match. While it was true that previous incarnations had had their fair share of special guest entrants, the frequency with which Cole and others hit that tagline was potentially cause for concern.
And surprise surprise, we had a lot of... surprises.
The most memorable wrestlers of this match were Ricardo Rodriguez, Santino Marella, Mick Foley and Kharma. No, that's not your WWE 2K20 universe mode gone awry, those are just four of the nine surprise entrants that we saw in this match. Now, we all love a little bit of comedy, but did we really need to see all three members of the announce team enter the Rumble, only to be eliminated in unspectacular fashion?
What makes it all the worse is the fact that we didn't even get the right result in the end - Chris Jericho, white-hot following his return and destined to face WWE Champion CM Punk at WrestleMania, was eliminated by Sheamus at the apex of the match. Nothing against Sheamus, but his victory came just for the sake of swerving the fans and nothing else.
At least he would go on to have a memorable match in the main event of WrestleMania. Oh, wait...
