Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel - Wrestlemania 11

It was an unprecedented move for WWE to attribute a historic accomplishment to a heel wrestler, but it was a sign of their faith in Shawn, who had had a great year in 1994. The champion Michaels would go on to face at Wrestlemania was Diesel, who (purely by coincidence, I'm sure) was his former bodyguard, tag team partner and best friend. To stack the deck in his favour, Shawn would enlist the help of Sycho Sid, who would accompany him ringside for his match. The match began with Shawn trying to use his speed advantage over Diesel, and was flying all over the ring and over-selling in the way that only pre-back surgery Shawn Michaels could. Some people dislike the way Shawn acted in the ring back then, but I always found it entertaining. The pace of the match slowed when Diesel's ribs got hurt, which Shawn would work over for the rest of the match. Diesel fought back into it, and even though he was hit with Sweet Chin Music, he managed to hit a (rather sloppy) Jacknife Powerbomb to get the win. The match was decent, but suffered a little from being lower on the card than the main event match between Bam Bam Bigelow & NFL star Lawrence Taylor; as well as the fact that Diesel's reign as a champion wasn't particularly well received. Shawn Michaels may have made history as the first man to win the Royal Rumble from #1, but he also became the first Royal Rumble winner to lose his Wrestlemania title shot. He wouldn't be the last though.
