During 2016 and 2017, the creative team invested a lot of time in the characters of Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho. The two Canadian Superstars carried Monday night RAW on their shoulders. Their skills helped the company draw a lot of audience to the show. Still, in the WrestleMania season, the writers put them in the mid-card title scene and introduced Brock Lesnar into the Universal Championship match.

Just like Goldberg, 'The Beast Incarnate' did not win the Royal Rumble or a #1 contender's match to earn a shot at the most sumptuous prize on the flagship show. On the contrary, Lesnar had suffered a squash defeat in his last singles match before the 'Showcase of Immortals.' However, he won the red belt and kicked off his reign of terror on RAW.

When Vince McMahon booked 'The Conqueror' to put his title on the line against the likes of Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman, it looked like WWE did the right thing by crowning 'The Night Mayor of Suplex City' as the new Universal Champion. Unfortunately, Roman Reigns dethroned him as the top champion, and the fans had no other option but to boo the organization for its decisions once again.
