Ranking Every WWE Backlash Main Event Ever - From Worst To Best
9. 2005 – Batista Vs. Triple H
Batista vs. Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship
at Backlash 2005 wasn’t necessarily a bad match, but I do think it suffered
from being sandwiched in between two much more exciting chapters in this
rivalry.
Four weeks prior to this Backlash meeting, Batista had celebrated his crowning moment as he defeated the Game at WrestleMania 21 to capture his maiden world championship. Obviously that changed the dynamic of this rematch, while it also meant that his eventual retention didn’t quite have the same impact as that dramatic title change at WrestleMania.
Plus, seven weeks later, these two foes would tear the house down in a brutal Hell in a Cell match at the June 26 Vengeance show.
With those highlights on either side, it’s easy for this Backlash encounter to pale in comparison. Also, the contest got a little messy towards the end, with multiples low-blows, a replacement referee, and of course the obligatory Ric Flair run-in.
Even so, this was by no means a terrible match; it just wasn’t quite the best work that these two would produce in their multiple meetings with one another.
