In terms of star-power, main events don’t come much bigger than that of Backlash 2001. WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin and Intercontinental Champion Triple H faced off against WWF Tag Team Champions the Undertaker and Kane—and all of the belts were on the line.

Some have criticised the lengthiness of this one, but considering the talent that was on display, I'd say the longer the better.

Much of the match centred around Austin and Triple H looking to isolate Kane, with the duo adding a slightly comedic element by running scared anytime the Undertaker came after them. Eventually the Deadman looked to have secured the victory though, getting the hot tag, clearing house and hitting Triple H with the Last Ride. However, rather than counting the subsequent pin, the referee would instead inform ‘Taker that he never saw the tag to begin with.

Further shenanigans would then ensue as Vince and Stephanie McMahon got involved, before Triple H hit Kane with the sledgehammer to pick up the victory for his team.

This is a match that sometimes forgotten about, given the way the faction abruptly disbanded a few weeks later when Triple H tore his quad. Which, by the way, JR kind of predicted, ominously stating that “someone’s going to get hurt badly” as the Power Trip left the arena with all the gold in tow. Not sure he meant it in that way though...
