This one goes to show that a long reign doesn't necessarily mean anything of significance.

While Austin Theory surely has all the right pieces of the archetypal WWE superstar, he's so far failed to put it together and come across as anything that has truly engaged an audience. In his short time on the main roster, he's been given a lot to work with - multiple title runs, the MITB briefcase, a high profile WrestleMania bout - and he's done his absolute best. Unfortunately, it's all been kind of...bland.

Theory's reign has felt absolutely by the numbers. It was so clear that the WWE writer's room gave the man everything they could get him over, but fans were numb to it. There was no real feeling in it. People didn't outright reject Theory, they just didn't care. Despite having title defence victories over the likes of Cena, Edge, Sheamus and so on, Theory just never felt the big deal WWE were telling you he was.

The title didn't help his push, and his reign didn't do anything for the prestige of the title.
