Kalisto really should have been a part of the Cruiserweight division's relaunch in 2016, but that was around the time WWE was attempting to get him over as a midcard competitor on SmackDown Live. Needless to say, their efforts were unsuccessful.

After his runs as a singles star on SmackDown and Raw fell flat, WWE finally decided to give him a chance in the Cruiserweight division. In the main event of Raw on 9 October 2017, Kalisto was introduced as the newest member to the 205 Live roster and promptly defeated Enzo Amore to become the new Cruiserweight champion one week later.

As cool of an ending as it was to the show, it was simply WWE's way of trying to make the masses care about the Cruiserweights. In other words, there were no plans to stick with Kalisto as the face of the division.

Following an uninspiring 13-day reign as champ, Kalisto lost the title right back to Enzo at the TLC pay-per-view. He failed to regain the gold in a rematch at Survivor Series and settled into his role as the leader of Lucha House Party soon after.

If recent tweets of his are to be believed, he was unsatisfied with his run in the Cruiserweight division as much as anyone and is currently eyeing an exit from the company.
