In some ways, Money in the Bank 2016 provided the pay-off to an angle that had been some three-and-a-half years in the making, with all three former members of the Shield each holding the WWE Championship within the space of a single night.

Far from being a mere trivia stat though, the execution of this whole thing was spot on. First, Dean Ambrose won the Money in the Bank briefcase, before a returning Seth Rollins overcame Roman Reigns to regain the world title that he never lost, only for Ambrose to sensationally cash-in during the show’s dying moments, bringing to a close a whirlwind of an evening. Having debuted as developmental graduates back in 2012, this was something of a symbolic night in which the trio reaffirmed their standing as the three top stars of the modern era.

Of course, The Shield’s story wasn’t the only memorable one to play out that night. Earlier in the evening, AJ Styles and John Cena went one-on-one for the first time in history, in a match between two icons in their own respective ways and whose careers had—up to that point—paralleled one another’s for the better part of a decade-and-a-half.

Naturally, their meeting lived up to that hype, making for a rare night in which the in-ring action was every bit as great as the storytelling behind it all.
