3. WrestleMania 33
WrestleMania 33 did not have any outright classics in terms of in-ring action, but as a spectacle, WWE shook off the bad mojo of the previous year and thoroughly sports-entertained the fans. With Shane McMahon and AJ Styles having a surprisingly great match, Brock and Goldberg trading finishers like baseball cards, and the Hardyz returning to one of the biggest pops in ‘Mania history, there were enough highs to outweigh the lows.
It was a good enough show that Roman Reigns retiring The Undertaker in an underwhelming main event is bumped to about third or fourth on the totem pole of discussion. Of course, there were other negative factors, such as the two rushed women’s matches, the standard John Cena/Nikki vs. Miz/Maryse tag match, and Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt competing in one of the worst world title matches in ‘Mania history.
Still, when considered as a whole, WrestleMania 33 might not be one of the great WrestleManias, but it was an entertaining, if overly long, love letter to WWE and all their nonsense for good and ill. Plus, unlike the previous year, it actually felt like WrestleMania, which is always crucial.
