After Hogan suffered crushed ribs at the hands of Earthquake in 1990, WWE began planting rumors that he was genuinely considering retirement. When kayfabe was strong and the internet didn't spoil things, a lot of fans were worried that they had seen the last of him. Thus, they sent him letters (encouraged by WWE), begging him not to let the injuries defeat him. This outpouring of love led to a triumphant return to the ring for The Immortal One at SummerSlam in 1990.

Receiving a thunderous ovation from the crowd, Hogan made his way down to the ring as he prepared to battle Earthquake. Though the match's finish wasn't exactly a satisfying conclusion for the occasion, the return itself was a clear example of why Hogan was easily the biggest wrestling superstar at the time.
