The lean North American scene was lacking anything that brought the good times back despite Vince McMahon having one more go with Hulk Hogan and another with Lex Luger playing Hulk Hogan. As was always the case, Bret Hart could be relied on in times of strife.

'The Hitman's King Of The Ring victory in June kicked off a blood feud with Jerry Lawler that kept houses from collapsing for the bulk of the year, crossed over to Memphis' USWA for some amazing mirror universe alignment switching and delivered a total pay-per-view banger at SummerSlam that also featured an underrated gem between Hart and the original incarnation of Doink.

Without a payoff due to Lawler's legal troubles at the end of the year, the company returned to it nearly two years later to squeeze some remaining juice from the fruit.
