In a wrestling world through which Vince Russo's influence still reverberates, a weird idea persists that predictable, sensible things are somehow bad.

CM Punk did the most obvious thing possible at Money In The Bank 2011 by entering the match of his life in front of his hometown crowd wearing the colours of the flag of Chicago. They received him as a God throughout the night, well before 'This Fire Burns' even roared over the PA, and his expert crowd manipulation, in tandem with his attire, intensified the reaction. This wasn't sucking up. He didn't have to do that. Chicago is a cursed sporting city, and Punk was intelligent enough to present himself as its next hero.

He tapped into something beyond merely saving the soul of a sports entertainment conglomerate.
