What happened: For Smackdown's last PPV offering of 2016, a lot of long-running programs came to a head. Chief amongst those was the feud between AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose, which culminated in a TLC match. The two had a great bout that delivered far more brutality than usually seen at a WWE event, but James Ellsworth would be the difference maker. He came down to the ring toward the end of the bout, shoved best friend Ambrose off the ladder and through a pair of tables, and then celebrated as AJ Styles grabbed the belt.

Why it was meh: As good as this match was, it deserved a better ending. WWE hates to have heels not named Triple H go over cleanly, but booking the bout this way made Ellsworth the focal point of attention, rather than the two main eventers who delivered an amazing contest. I'll grant that it did get people talking, and that Ellsworth's motivation was original (he was owed a title shot and wanted it against Styles, whom he had already beaten), but since the turn they've really had no idea what to do with him, so it was a waste.
