6. The Rock vs. Mankind - I Quit Match (Royal Rumble 1999)
WWE.comHeres a match infamous for several reasons, not the least of which is its prominent role in the documentary Beyond The Mat. This is the bout that led to very real tension between Rock and Foley, Mick felt taken advantage of because Rock took far too many chair shots at his unprotected head, and then never apologized afterward for getting caught up in the moment. Viewing this match now through a lens conditioned for PG content is quite startling. These two men, top stars mind you, beat each other senseless, especially Foley. He was handcuffed behind his back and wailed on with repeated full-force swings of a chair, until both the chair and Mankinds skull were dented. The brutal slugfest featured a creative ending where Mick Foleys voice, previously recorded saying I quit was played over the loudspeaker while The Rock held the microphone to his mouth, allowing Mankind to maintain his credibility as a tough S.O.B. who would never give up and keeping the heel heat on The Rock. The thought of seeing two big names engaging in such a way in todays much safer WWE is unfathomable.
