Shawn Michaels' 10 Best Matches Ever
4. Vs. Triple H (SummerSlam 2002)
According to Michaels, he was cautioned before the match by Arn Anderson that wrestling was not like riding a bike. After four years away from the ring, there was no guarantee that Michaels would be able to duplicate the brilliance that was once standard for his performances. After watching the match, "The Enforcer" would concede to Michaels that, apparently, he was the exception to the rule.
Michaels' comeback bout against his treacherous former friend was of the "unsanctioned" variety. In one sense, it felt like a classic Dusty Rhodes showcase, in that Michaels was the old gunslinger out to right a wrong, to act as avenger against unrepentant evil. The back injuries that ended his career were being put to the test against a match with a good amount of risks.
The story and the action were equally superb, with fans living and dying on Michaels' fight for what was right. When he narrowly prevails, even cynical New Yorkers in the crowd explode with joy. Few could tug at heartstrings the way Michaels could, no matter the era.
