The ending occupies most of the memories, as Kane made what could very well be the greatest debut in WWE history. His evacuation from red-tinted hell, in order to unleash fury upon The Undertaker, goes down as a historic moment. It doesn't, however, take away from the fact that Undertaker and Michaels perfected the Hell in a Cell match on the structure's first go.

For two months, fans had wanted to see Undertaker brutalize an increasingly-arrogant Michaels, and fans were treated to just that sight. As the match wore on, Michaels was genuinely beaten into a bloody pulp, enduring chairs to the head, battering rams into the cage wall, and falls from the side of the Cell. If you hated Michaels and can forgive the ending, this was pure catharticism.

In those larval stages of the Attitude Era, the combination of visceral carnage and multi-pronged emotional connection (for Shawn getting killed and for the Kane/Undertaker confrontation) was the recipe for a classic. More than 20 years later, this stands up as the greatest Hell in a Cell match ever.
