Sting: 5 Awesome Matches And 5 That Sucked

3. Sting vs. The Great Muta (The Great American Bash 1989)

The 1989 Bash is commonly considered one of the greatest professional wrestling events to ever take place. It featured such classics as Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk in an I Quit match, Lex Luger vs. Ricky Steamboat for the U.S. title, a War Games match, and this impressive outing from Sting and Muta. The Great Muta is one of Japan's greatest wrestling exports. He came to WCW in the late 80s and immediately wowed audiences with his aerial maneuvers and trademark mist that he would spit in the eyes of opponents. Dark, silent and mysterious, Muta served as a great foil for the colorful Sting. When the two locked horns at the Great American Bash, fans knew they were in for a treat. The first few minutes of this match are action-packed. The two set a breakneck pace and worked about 30 minutes of wrestling into less than half that amount of time. The ending takes a bit away from the greatness, with Sting hitting a suplex on Muta and both guys getting their shoulders up before the three count, but it's still required viewing for Sting fans. The two would also do some good business later that year at Starrcade, in a match I was lucky enough to experience live.
