Sting: 9 Memorable WCW World Title Matches You Need To See
2. Sting Vs. Hulk Hogan - Starrcade 1997
691866In a historical context, this match was a disaster. A botched finish, and a near washed up Hogan, dragged this down into quicksand. But at the time, this was the biggest WCW match ever, as Sting was being looked at to finally defeat the evil Hollywood Hulk Hogan, who had held the World Title for 500 of the previous 505 days.
After not being in action for well over a year, Sting's in-ring debut of his Crow gimmick was one of the most anticipated moments in WCW history. As he began hitting his signature moves, flashes of the past became apparent to the fans and commentators alike.
This match had been built perfectly, but soon was exposed to be nothing more than a great plan with shoddy follow through.
After a fast count, that wasn't fast, (Sting pretty much lost fair and square) Bret Hart, who refereed the Larry Zbyszko-Eric Bischoff match earlier, knocked out Nick Patrick, and assumed referee duties for the rest of the match. Shortly after, Sting submitted Hogan to give us the finish we should have gotten the first time around.
This is a must-see moment when wondering what happened to WCW in the long run. It can be argued this was the companies peak, and they would start their descent in the following months.
