Sting: 9 Memorable WCW World Title Matches You Need To See
1. Sting Vs. Ric Flair - The Great American Bash 1990
What better place to end than the beginning? Sting's chase for Ric Flair's World Heavyweight Championship began at Clash of The Champions in April 1988. As we saw, Sting famously wrestled Ric Flair to a 45 minute draw head to head with Wrestlemania IV. His next year and a half saw him battling The Horsemen, and overcoming a career threatening knee injury in early 1990.
Conversely, Flair came into this contest on top of his game, having been champion since midway through 1989 when he finally finished off Ricky Steamboat. The time was right for Sting's ascent, and Flair respected Sting to such a degree where he refused to drop the championship to anyone but him. Sorry Luger.
With all the good guys like JYD and The Steiners patrolling the outside of the ring, Flair would be left to defend the championship sans the help of The Horsemen. Still dealing with a knee injury, Sting wasn't as explosive as normal, but he and Flair put forth a match suitable for a coronation. Sting would reverse Flair's Figure Four into a small package, to claim his place as THE MAN in WCW.
Will Sting once again rise to the occasion when he meets Seth Rollins at Night of Champions? Come back to WhatCulture, for in-depth coverage and analysis.
