The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Of Kenny Omega Possibly Joining WWE
The Ugly
While worldwide exposure and increased financial stability would understandably be a reason for Omega to sign with WWE, what it means for the rest of the business could be quite tragic.
With WCW and ECW now the property of WWE, and with TNA’s uncertain future, few stand toe-to-toe with the “Sports Entertainment” juggernaut. Among those promotions who even stand a chance as a worthy alternative is New Japan.
The Japan-based company has lost key stars throughout the last couple years to WWE, including Devitt, Styles, and Shinsuke Nakamura. While the company has been able to maintain – even increase – its viewership following key talent losses, the loss of Omega would be devastating for the company because of the many Western eyes he brought to their product. The foreign audience New Japan has gained may start to dwindle if its megastar leaves.
A signing with WWE would mean another independent talent is taken from a part of the industry that’s just trying to survive. With yet another star joining WWE, it brings the company closer to the feared monopoly they may be trying to become. In any form of business, monopolies are a terrible thing.
With NXT, WWE has been able to snatch up talent and develop its future. As a result, independent promotions see their rosters fade away and they have to fill the void to maintain their viewership, which isn’t always easy. Omega could be a valuable commodity to any indy card, but with him out of the picture, it’s just one less big-name star to choose from.
If WWE continues to sign all the top talent on the independent wrestling market, it will be hard for the company to book every member of its roster to their full potential and it leaves an uncertain future for many indy promotions.
In a scenario of WWE being the only game in town, will it have to be a good one?
