The Greatest Match From Every WWE SummerSlam Ever
4. 2016 - John Cena Vs. AJ Styles
A lot of “dream matches” don’t live up to fan expectation when they finally happen. This one exceeds anything we could have imagined. Cena and Styles had locked up previously, but Styles’ pals Anderson and Gallows had made their presence felt in AJ’s win, and so the question of who was the greatest of the era remained unanswered.
There could be no doubt this time, as Cena puts the phenomenal one over completely clean, in one of the greatest matches of his career. It’s an elegant angle, two industry veterans with something to prove to the other, and willing to pull out every last move from their arsenal to get the win.
The high spots start early, with Cena kicking out of the Styles Clash, and while kicking out of finishers can be overused, it works perfectly here. Cena destroys Styles with an elevated Attitude Adjustment, but it’s not enough. Cena’s look of disbelief is perfect - he just doesn’t know what he can do to beat this guy.
As it transpires, he can’t. AJ downs Cena with a forearm, then leaves John in the ring to commiserate, and bask in an audience who haven’t enjoyed one of his matches so much in a long while.
