23. WrestleMania XIII: Bret Hart Vs Steve Austin

A strange show in a transitional era, WrestleMania 13 is flawed by any measure, but even on a stacked card, the submission match between Bret Hart and Steve Austin would overshadow just about anything.

The dawning of the Attitude Era came at the end of this brutal bout, the sight of Austin’s crumpled, bloodied body its signature image. The booking here is unsurpassed - Hart wins, but Austin never gives up, choosing to fade into unconsciousness rather than submit to the Sharpshooter.

The match is famous for its double turn, Hart entering the babyface, Stone Cold the heel, and the roles swapping by the final bell. Hart is best known for his technical skills, but he proves his worth as a storytelling brawler here, hurling Austin through the crowd and blading him right in front of McMahon (this was, at the time, a sackable offense).

Hart’s days with WWE were sadly numbered, but this explosive bout strapped a rocket on Stone Cold, who never looked back. Austin recalls this as the best match of his career - given his CV, that’s saying a hell of a lot, but it’s hard to argue against him.
