The Greatest Match From Every WWE WrestleMania
34. WrestleMania II: Randy Savage Vs George "The Animal" Steele
The inaugural WrestleMania was a great success, so naturally WWE decided to completely shift things around the following year. Hosting WrestleMania in three separate cities must have seemed a good idea to someone, but spreading the talent so thin led inevitably to three lacklustre shows.
One of the bright spots is Randy Savage’s WrestleMania debut. He would go on to work some of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history, and while this is decidedly not one of them, his game of cat and mouse with George “The Animal” Steele is goofy good fun in a WrestleMania with little to offer.
It plays out essentially like a cartoon: Steele is the lumbering aggressor, but finds himself distracted time and again by the feminine charms of Savage’s valet Miss Elizabeth, allowing the cunning Macho Man to hit him with sneak attacks, and eventually retain the intercontinental belt.
There’s not a whole lot of top tier ring action here (though it should be noted that Steele kicks out of the Savage elbow, unheard of at the time), but the charisma of the two stars and the gaudy nature of the old fashioned clash of two very different body types makes for a fun little match.
Inessential, but highly likeable.
