32. WrestleMania IV: Randy Savage Vs Ted DiBiase

There’s no way around it - WrestleMania IV was a mess. The tournament was a terrible idea, its booking at times nonsensical. They wasted the likes of Bam Bam Bigelow, repeated Hogan vs Andre with severely diminished returns, and squandered the chance to match up Savage and Steamboat for a rehash of the previous year’s barnburner.

Things come to life only in the finale of the tournament, in which the Macho Man, in his fourth bout of the evening, takes on Ted DiBiase. The quality shines through here, and while the match is no ***** encounter, when you’re pairing up Savage and DiBiase, the result is generally going to be good at the very least.

Savage’s well-earned World title is a cheery note on which to end the show, but the closing moments of WrestleMania IV are perhaps best remembered for Hulk Hogan’s spotlight stealing celebration of his friend. He rushes the ring to congratulate Randy (and set up their bout the next year), but more importantly to ensure that he remains the focus as ever - a bitter finish to a shoddy event.
