A fantastic match that encompasses every form of pro wrestling, from accomplished mat grappling to flat-out brawling, this clash is brought up several levels by the chemistry of its performers. Bret Hart and Roddy Piper go way back, and their familiarity with one another leads to a free-flowing and ever-evolving battle for the intercontinental belt.

The disparate characters the two portray - Hart’s pious babyface, Piper’s unapologetic perma-heel - make this an easy sell. Coupled with this, the two are among the absolute best at getting across genuine antipathy for their opponent.

This isn’t a brutal match (Piper, in a rare display of sportsmanship, declines to bash Bret’s head in with the ring bell), but the two make this a hard fought and highly competitive bout, two equally matched competitors searching for that tiny edge that will grant them the win.

Hart gets the pinfall by simply outwrestling his opponent, but the match is a great look for both participants. The Hitman would go on to star in the following two WrestleManias (though the less said about IX the better) and Piper gave probably his best big stage performance of his career.
