The Greatest Match From Every WWE WrestleMania

29. WrestleMania VII: The Rockers Vs Barbarian & Haku

Wrestlemania VII is a truly odd event. Moved to a far smaller stadium due to “security concerns” (read: lacklustre ticket sales) over Sergeant Slaughter’s turncoat gimmick, the main event saw Hulk Hogan go over once again in a case of diminishing returns.

What would become clear in a few years: the future of the business was right there in the main event. Marty Jannetty explodes onto the stage, flying around the ring and superkicking his way to the WWE universe’s heart, alongside a pal of his by the name of Shawn Michaels.

Michaels may not be Mr WrestleMania just yet, but his star power is apparent. The Rockers are a breath of fresh air, and while Haku and Barbarian do their part, this opening match is all about the mulleted young men in odd, seaweed-draped trunks.

Special mention must go to Bobby Heenan, who can get more out of the crowd from a single smirk than most can with a five minute promo. In these lacklustre days for the brand, Heenan’s acerbic wit and expert heel work keeps things ticking along as much as anyone else.
