In the World Wrestling Federation, Big John Studd was the first top level member of the Heenan Family. Heenan took control of Studd's affairs whilst the big man was in a raging feud with André the Giant, a beef that would last most of the early 1980s. Business picked up once Heenan became involved, and Heenan's story would intrinsically be linked to André's until the end of the decade and the big Frenchman's career.

Studd was a heck of a heel at the time, helped no end by the fact he was freakin' huge. At the first WrestleMania, Studd took on André in a Bodyslam challenge, further proof that the first 'Mania was all gimmick and no wrestle. André won the match to save his career. Studd stayed aligned with Heenan and the family all the way up until his departure from the company in 1986.

Big John Studd returned as a babyface in 1988, and naturally began to feud with the Heenan Family, including the newly-recruited André the Giant. Studd won the 1989 Royal Rumble and it is this he is mostly remembered for.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
