Lionheart just wasn't really clicking in World Championship Wrestling, so Jericho turned heel in 1997 by slaying the knee of Rey Mysterio with a toolbox. He then defeated Juventud Guerrera, taking his mask in the process, and began to collect trophies from his fallen victims.

His most notable feud during this time was with Dean Malenko, this writer's all-time favourite wrestler, and that beef has gone down as one of the few bright spots in late 90s WCW. Malenko would defeat Jericho for the Cruiserweight Championship, which set Jericho off on one of the greatest character amendments in WCW history.

Jericho claimed conspiracy, and went on to blame anyone and everyone for the loss. J.J. Dillion, Ted Turner, The US Government and others were blamed. Nobody was safe. Of course, this was all wrapped up in the classic delusional heel persona, but Jericho played it to such a tee that it felt fresh and invigorating once more. It was Jericho's first true chance to show some personality, and the man shined in the role.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
