Nearly three months before they closed out the Extreme Rules pay-per-view, The Miz and John Morrison clashed for the WWE Championship in the first WWE match of 2011 on Monday Night Raw. Morrison previously became the No. 1 contender by beating Sheamus in a grueling Ladder match at TLC, and with the showing he had on that night, he appeared to be primed to become a breakout star in the new year.

Granted, WWE should have held off on this marquee match until the Royal Rumble, but it was surely an electric way of kicking off 2011. The Falls Count Anywhere stipulation was added the week prior, an environment in which both men thrived. The Prince of Parkour made awesome use of the stipulation by jumping off of everything in sight, including the patented WWE logo on the stage.

He likely would have had the prestigious prize won had it not been for Alex Riley, but even after disposing of Miz's protege, Morrison was spent spiraling through a table at ringside when The Awesome One moved out of the way. From there, Miz picked up the scraps with a vicious Skull Crushing Finale on the outside for the decisive victory.

Morrison may have fallen short in his pursuit of the title, but he certainly proved his worth as a top-tier talent with his performance in this matchup.
